How we started
Looking back, Dubia Roach Depot began the day we picked up a box of Dubia roach feeders at a local reptile show in 2012. Our animals loved them, which was great, but a short time later we noticed something interesting: their health seemed better. They looked better. Their mood was better and their appetite was stronger. In short, our animals were livelier and more engaged.
So we fed them Dubia roaches for several months and we found that those initial positive effects remained. We suspected they were a result of the dietary change from mostly crickets and mealworms to Dubia roaches.
This idea excited us, so we hit the books and began researching Dubia roaches. We were looking for something to explain the health improvements we saw. Ultimately we found what we were looking for.
So after careful consideration and experimentation, we began breeding Dubia roaches. Our goal was a steady supply of feeders to our animals.
Fast forward a year…
Work on dubiaroachdepot.com began in 2013. Because we had worked in a technology/web related field, we drew heavily on that experience in the planning and development stages. The success of our own Dubia experiments was also significant, and we wanted to include our data and experience as a cornerstone of our website.
In addition to selling Dubia roaches, we wanted to pass along the information we had learned along the way. These topics have grown to include Dubia roach growth, breeding, and nutrition.

How we do it
In short, we do it naturally with the help of a singular focus on optimum Dubia roach health through nutrition and environment.
After that first batch of roaches from the reptile show in 2012, and after experiencing firsthand how happy and healthy our animals became after eating them, we started experimenting with various foods and gutload combinations. Our goal was to make Dubia roaches even healthier. We knew this could be done. However, not much was known about Dubia roaches at the time and we suspected production was not optimized in most cases. To that end, we conducted what is now over a hundred tests on all-natural, human-grade foods, food ingredients, and nutrient/food combinations.
Experimentation
Our goal is and always has been to create the most nutritious Dubia roach feeders for our animals and yours. To that end, we still test new ingredients. We still believe we can make further improvements to our roach chow that will improve the health and nutritional value of our roaches. That process remains today essentially what it was in 2012: We methodically test ingredients, observe results, then either accept or reject based on criteria we developed. Of course, we do this with an eye on growth and productivity.
The result is an efficient and effective Dubia roach breeding program, strong, nutritious, and productive Dubia roaches, and a unique and very special roach chow that makes it all happen. While our method is not strictly “scientific”, it is empirical, methodical, and importantly…effective.
Our results
We have been fortunate to stumble upon ingredients during our tests that increase the health and vitality of our roaches. And we don’t just believe these things work, we know they work. The evidence is clear. We’ve seen it ourselves. It is true that healthy and productive Dubia roaches make better feeders. This is a win for both us and our customers.
Raising cockroaches professionally (of all things) has been interesting and strangely rewarding. Looking back on how we started with no cockroach knowledge and comparing that to where we are today with our breeding operation is a bit surreal. There’s a huge difference between what we knew then and what we know now. We’ve learned a lot, for sure.
