In-depth information
These guys are big. They weigh a lot for their size, as well as they should. They’ve been gorging on healthy food their entire lives, which at this point is many months. They are brimming with nutrients because they retain much of the nutrition they’ve consumed throughout life. Dubia roaches eat not just to grow but also to store nutrients for use later in adulthood. This tendency to lock away nutrients is at least part of why they’re so nutritious.
The suitability of a feeder insect for an animal often depends on the size of the animal and the insect. For example, not all bearded dragons can easily handle a large Dubia roach, but many can. With a feeder this size, it’s good to know a bit about an animal’s habits and abilities. If it’s accustomed to eating large feeders, you are all set. When in doubt, we suggest starting small and working up in size.
As we’ve said before, Dubia roaches are outstanding feeders for many reasons. One reason is superior gutloadability, and this is where these large nymphs stand out. Literally — they can pack away an enormous amount of food. And when they do, it’s easy to see because their full stomachs cause serious body elongation. If you’re into gut loading, a bulging belly signals that they’re ready for feeding.
Interestingly, the difference between a hungry Dubia roach and a full-fed one can be double its body weight or more. And this is especially true of larger Dubia. For this reason, you want to give feeder roaches nutritious foods that are good for them and the animals that eat them. What goes into the roach often ends up in the prey animals unchanged.
Like all our roaches, we feed our 1-½ inch Dubia fruits and vegetables throughout their lives. We also give them our special Dubia roach chow that contains nutrients for every growth stage. Late-stage nymphs like these are full of nutrition thanks to a lifetime of healthy eating!
Item specific sizing notes
- This is our largest Dubia roaches. Some size variation is normal.
- We ship our roaches fully fed and hydrated, which means they may become dehydrated in transit. Be sure to feed them when they arrive.
- You will notice that their size will increase and decrease when you feed them. You can use this to adjust their size before feeding them off to your animal(s).
