Product Details
The reproductive role of adult male Dubia roaches arguably makes them more expendable than females. However, we don’t treat them differently. We provide the same food, environment, and care to our males as we do to our females.
This means they eat only the most nutritious foods, and their living conditions exceed their needs. This contributes to optimum health and productivity, thereby increasing their value as feeders and breeders. All our breeders, whether male or female, bring this benefit to your colony. Diet, temperature, and other external factors help determine the lifetime mating success of Dubia roaches.
As feeders, male Dubia tend to be more active than nymphs. They’re faster and tend to run around more, making them a good choice if your animal likes a challenge or needs strong movement to elicit a feeding response. And of course, they contain all the nutrition Dubia roaches are famous for.
We offer two options: “Standard” and “Newly Emerged”.
We collect standard adult males from the general population without regard to age. We replenish our own adult male breeders with these when necessary. Their age is essentially random.
On the other hand, newly emerged males recently transitioned from nymph to adult—typically in the last week or so. New males aren’t required for breeding, but some customers like them, which is understandable. They tend to live longer than regular males, and we’ve heard reports that fresh males are more productive than older ones, though this isn’t something we’ve investigated.
Important Note on Housing Males
We recommend a female:male ratio of between 3:1 and 7:1. If adding male feeders to a colony increases the ratio above this range, keep them separately. Too many males cause stress in a colony. You need an adequate number of males for optimal breeding, but having too many is counterproductive. At or near 3:1 is ideal. 7:1 is our maximum.

It’s impossible to find males at my local pet stores, so I ordered a pair of males from here to start a colony. They generously included a third male! I was worried because the mailman ignored instructions and put them in the mailbox, but they all arrived alive and well! They look very healthy.
