- At least 10% adult females
- Adult males in a 1:5 male to female ratio
- A range of nymph sizes — typically small through large
- A nymph mix that resembles the successful breeding colony they came from
For example, our 250-count Starter Colony contains at least 25 adult females, five adult males, and around 220 nymphs of various sizes, ranging from small to large.
General Starter Colony Information
Our Dubia Roach Starter Colony is a good choice for those who want to quickly establish a breeding colony to provide a constant supply of feeders.
As a general rule, Dubia are very social roaches. The more interaction they have, the healthier they tend to be. Within reason, higher colony density leads to healthier roaches. And because healthy roaches are productive roaches, the more of them there are, the faster they tend to breed.
And of course, faster breeding means quicker colony growth. While only a handful of adults can create a sustainable, thriving colony in time, Dubia roaches are most productive in denser colonies containing mixed nymphs, such as those that occur naturally in the wild. Our Starter Colonies mimic this natural variety.
Because all the Dubia roaches in our Starter Colonies are organic-fed and professionally bred, they make exceptionally healthy and productive stock for breeding projects.
We focus on providing our roaches with an ideal environment and superior nutrition. These are important for production because roaches store nutrients in their entire juvenile lives in preparation for breeding. When they become adults, they rely on those stored reserves. The healthier Dubia roaches are as pre-adult nymphs, the more nutrients they pack away for later use. And the greater their nutrient stores, the longer and more productive their adult breeding lives tend to be.
We’re so confident you’ll like our roaches that we guarantee them 100%! Where a new Dubia roach colony ultimately ends up largely depends on where it begins. That’s how it goes with roach nutrition, so get your breeding project started right with our Dubia Roach Starter Colony!

So far so good! Received 50 large male/female dubias and 50 smaller ones. Got them all set up and everyone’s alive and thriving so far. I’m very new with dubias and I had no idea how to get a breeding colony going so this kit is so helpful to get started!

All of the roaches showed up alive and well. They ended up being shipped and received when Temps were negative 16 with a negative 45 wind chill. Couldn’t believe how they were shipped well enough to survive those temps!!!

My box arrived 3 days earlier than expected! Packaging was amazing and the hot pack was still very warm. A few nymphs were dead but I expected that with shipping and how mail carriers just toss packages. All adults were alive and look amazing! I had talked myself out of buying for a few months and finally went for it and I’m so glad I did!! Buy the starter colony!

I purchased my colony 5/3/23 and received it 2 days later. They were left in the mailbox and all were OK except 2-4 small nymphs. It’s been nearly 3 weeks and I am noticing x-small nymphs crawling around. I believe my guys are breeding. I added the combo cleaner crew and everything is going well.
Randy G.
Great lil starter colony. Two of the females were already droppin babies as i was adding them into the enclosure would definitely recommend.
Janelle
Great experience! Shipping was super fast and everyone arrived alive! Due to me not getting them out of the mailbox for a few hours (darn it) I did end up losing a few from the cleaner crew that night, but they were alive when I got them out…just moving slow. The colony is thriving now and everyone is looking healthy. Thanks for quality feeders!!
Jason
Fast shipping and they are doing good.
Anna
Intact, well packaged colony. Fast shipping!
Sarah
Package of 250 Dubias came completely intact and well-prepared. ALL roaches remain alive and well (thriving after 2.5 weeks) except for 1 or 2 babies and 1 adult female that didn’t make it. We are extremely pleased with our 1st dubia colony experience. Thank you so much, Dubia Roach Depot!
Andy
Received my 100 pack today, shipping was very fast and only one small one doa.
Abi
All of my adult roaches arrived alive and healthy, and only about 10 of the smaller nymphs were dead on arrival. I ordered a heat/cold pack to go with them because I wasn’t sure whether or not I needed one, and they refunded me for it because the weather was acceptable. Excellent customer service and high quality starter colony!
Andrea
I purchased a colony of 250. Only lost a few of the adults, but they had sent extra so I was still left with more than what I ordered. The colony has already had babies and it’s only been 3 weeks! They are doing great and I’m so pleased. I had a previous colony of adults, and it took over 2 months for them to start breeding – this was way better. If I ever have to start another colony – They’ll be who I purchase from!
Matthew
Excellent. Ordered a Starter Colony of 100 with a cleaner crew on a Saturday and they arrived on Monday. Shipping was fast and only a few were lost. Will order again and highly recommend!
Martin
Just got my order. Packaging was amazing and only lost 2 out of the whole order. Overall I am extremely happy with my shipment and will be ordering 250 colony as soon as it’s back in stock.

I’m very happy with my order! I ordered the 100 mix and got 10 females, 4 males, 93 mixed sizes nymphs plus one or two of the females had given birth during shipping, so there was little newborn babies uncounted for!! Very very happy customer and will definitely order again and recommend!
