Product Details
The Halloween hissing cockroach (Elliptorhina javanica) is a big, bold, and beautiful tropical roach known for its unmistakable orange, black, and yellow “Halloween” stripes. Like other hissers, it originates from Madagascar and shares similar traits.
Halloween hissers thrive in a variety of setups ranging from small, sparse containers with simple harborage to larger display terrariums with natural substrate designed to showcase them as specimens.
Whatever style and type of enclosure you choose, their environmental needs are the same: generally humid conditions (60–70%), warm temperatures (75–85°F), and dark places to hide. Cockroaches are social insects but prefer to be left alone, often hiding in dark, secluded areas with other roaches. They are gentile and docile, becoming tame with regular handling.
Halloween hissers can climb smooth surfaces, such as glass, so it’s essential to take measures to contain them. They do very well on a diet of fruits, vegetables, and roach chow, which should enable them to reach their full adult length of about three inches and live a full lifespan of 2-3 years.
Here are some ways Halloween hissers compare to hissing cockroaches as a group:
- Their size is average
- They eat more and grow faster
- They explore more and are quicker
- They hide more
- Care & cleaning requirements are average
Elliphtorhina javanica is a captivating cockroach with bold, contrasting colors that spark interest and draw the eye in a well-designed habitat. It’s not the biggest species, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in beauty and charm. Read more about hissers and their care requirements.
